Why 4 × 5 inches is a starting point, not a universal answer
Bag construction
Flat-bottom, stand-up, and side-gusset bags create different front panels even at the same stated coffee weight.
Package features
Valves, zippers, tear notches, top seals, and gusset folds reduce the area where a label can sit flat.
Filled geometry
Coffee pushes the bag outward and changes the shelf-facing width. Measure and test the bag as it will actually be sold.

Should I measure an empty or filled coffee bag?
Use the production bag in the state closest to application and sale. Filling changes the front panel, gussets, curves, and visible shelf angle, so an empty-bag measurement alone can be misleading.
